Nijmegen - All Image Descriptions

From February/ March 2011 till December 2012 I worked and lived in Nijmegen. This gallery grew over time, just like “Dortmund” still does.

Bike Path

This is one of the typical two way bike paths in Nijmegen, going past some buildings from Radboud Universiteit.
2010-11-29__22-37-22.jpg

Max Planck Institute

The entrance to my new work place (which in November 2010 was only an internship place for me).
2010-12-03__09-46-50.jpg

Institute in Winter

Here, in the beginning of December, I was still pleased with the snow. But later, back in Dortmund, when all trafic, especially with bicycles, was severely limited for several weeks, I sure had enough of it.
2010-12-03__16-33-29.jpg

Bicycle Parking

This is the parking deck for bicycles at Nijmegen Station. Actually I don't stand at the end of the hallway, but in the middle - and there are two or three more of them... in addition to the parking area on the surface, which is about the size of a big football field.
2010-12-03__19-03-14.jpg

RRX

Will the Rhein Ruhr Express remain a dream, like the “Metrorapid”, or will a fast connection between Cologne (on the left with the Dome) and Dortmund (on the right with the television tower) one day become reality? This poster was in a conventional express train (somewhere between Venlo, Netherlands, and Dortmund).

Voorstadslaan

I now live in one of these pretty houses.
2011-01-20__11-49-41.jpg

Underpass

From the city centre to the “Voorstad” (outskirts)...
2011-01-20__11-51-11.jpg

Escalator instructions

Here it's not illegal (like in Dortmund), to use your bike on the escalator (roltrappen), but they even explain to you how to do it properly!
2011-01-20__11-53-49.jpg

Spoorbrug

Nijmegen's railway bridge with adjacent bike lane and restored towers.
2011-01-20__11-58-26.jpg

Water

The familiar Rhine is called Waal in Nijmegen, after the Nederrijn’s splitting-off from it (near Millingen). This picture is taken from the Spoorbrug. In it you see Nijmegen and the Waalbrug.
2011-01-20__12-04-25.jpg

High Water

My flatmates told me the water level had already decreased, but it was still quite high on this day.
2011-01-20__12-08-39.jpg

Railway Bridge

Here the “Snelbinder”, added to the 1983 bridge in 2004, is well visible.
2011-01-20__12-17-05.jpg

Snelbinder

A fantastic bike path - and riding here is much nicer than using the bike lane on the other Waal bridge, with all the stinking cars and trucks.
2011-01-20__12-18-34.jpg

Ship

Note a very special picture, for there is usually a lot of traffic on this river.

Harbour and Power Plant

What the television tower was for me in Dortmund is this power plant’s smoke here in Nijmegen: the first thing I see from a distance, when I return home.
2011-01-20__12-32-01.jpg

Living by the Water

These houses are in about five minutes walking distance from my place.
2011-01-20__12-40-00.jpg

Te koop

There are quite a few nice houses for sale in Nijmegen.
2011-01-21__11-39-54.jpg

Bank in the Fog

Several times it was foggy until about noon.
2011-01-21__11-56-34.jpg

Waalbrug

This 1930s bridge is a bottleneck for cars - whereas buses are never delayed, because they got a lane on their own.
2011-01-21__12-07-57.jpg

Waal Waterlevel

Some lines of text from this board (because it”s not well readable in this online version):
Hoogst bekende waterstand, januari 1926: NAP + 13,64 m
Waterstand januari/februari 1995: NAP + 13,53 m
Jaargemiddelde: NAP + 7,52 m
Laagst bekennde waterstand, september 2003: NAP + 4,72 m
Rivierboden: ca. NAP + 2,00 m
“NAP” is the Amsterdam Ordnance Datum.

Huize Heijendaal

This building also has it’s own Wikipedia article (Netherlands).
2011-02-08__15-29-39.jpg

Rabobank

A bank like a castle... which probably is to inspire trust - futile with me, of course.
2011-02-09__17-14-56.jpg

Grazing on the Banks

A pleasure for those who like horses.
2011-02-09__17-15-06.jpg

Spoorbrug II

While the Snelbinder was deserted in the previous picture it is bustling here (and this shows that the red paths are not merely bike paths, but may also be used by “bromfiets”).
2011-02-09__17-38-34.jpg

Waalbrug II

Bridges can be so beautiful.
2011-02-23__12-07-54.jpg

Nieuwe Brug

A new bridge is to be build here until 2013. Noteworthy detail: although the bridge is to be named after the American’s crossing of the Waal (oversteek), to commemorate the liberation from German occupation in WW2, both cars recognisable in the model on this board are German types (Mercedes and Audi)...

Industry and Beach

Here both Waal banks are (still) very different. But I’m afraid the new bridge will lead to more developments on the right Waal bank.

I♥NYmegen

The window on the left also showcases the corresponding t-shirts.
2011-03-04__11-42-26.jpg

Lonely little house

Round this house there are only meadows, water, and a path that is not open to cars.
2011-03-04__12-23-02.jpg

Peacock

A rare and pretty sight by the road.
2011-03-04__12-57-32.jpg

Idyllic Village

This picture is taken from the dyke, but obviously not at the best time of the day (with the midday sun being too “hard”).
2011-03-04__13-10-11.jpg

Horses II

Depending on your monitor (and eyes) you may still be able to see the power plant’s smoke ascending to the right of the church tower (on the other side of the Waal).
2011-03-04__13-14-11.jpg

Garbage Catcher

A funny construction, which tempts to throw rubbish into it whilst still riding on the bike.
2011-03-06__11-23-57.jpg

Nymweger Straße

The street from Kranenburg, still in Germany, just 10 kilometers from Nijmegen.
2011-05-21__07-45-39.jpg

Kronenburgerpark

The Kronenburger Park is located quite centrally, near the central station.
2011-05-21__08-06-29.jpg

Villa Lux

With LUX and VillaLUX Nijmegen has got two excellent cinemas. Buildings of this style dominate Nijmegen's cityscape.
2011-05-27__19-40-10.jpg

Waal Beach

On this side of the river there is almost always a free bench available - a nice place for contemplation.
2011-05-27__20-23-46.jpg

St. Annastraat

Note the post ad: morgen is vandaag (“tomorrow is today”) - my experience is somewhat different...
2011-07-07__19-57-52.jpg

De Nieuwe Winkel

The Lange Hezelstraat with many cosy little shops.
2011-07-20__19-40-27.jpg

Vierdaagse

During the annual Four Day Marches (Vierdaagse) the city stands upside down: everywhere there are celebrations and the population is outnumbered several times by visitors.
2011-07-22__12-31-41.jpg

Via Gladiola

St. Annastraat, here passing my work place, is turned into Via Gladiola during the Vierdaagse. The “survivors” of the marches are received with Gladiolus, like Roman gladiators.
2011-07-22__13-10-38.jpg

Traffic Police

An impressive performance on the last day of the marches, when directing motorised traffic and marchers on this junction: it's hard for me to imagine German police acting so laid-back and self-ironic.
2011-08-06__13-25-19.jpg

Utrecht

This is not Nijmegen, but by NS it is only an hour away.
2012-01-10__09-28-05.jpg

Fog in Winter

In winter there is more fog in Nijmegen, compared to Dortmund - probably because it is more rural. This construction site is near the central station, where new student apartments are being build.
2012-01-17__15-33-34.jpg

De Gelderlander

On my way to work I now have a better view of the Wal... until a new building will soon block it again.
2012-01-17__15-45-14.jpg

Skating rink

After the high water's decline this remaining pond froze.
2012-01-17__15-45-28.jpg

Sea gulls

2012-01-17__16-25-09.jpg

Plein 1944

A big construction site at the centre of Nijmegen... where a two bedroom apartment is going to cost €160,000.

A year ago this place still looked different.
2012-02-19__11-01-46.jpg

Auto-Handel Kleyngeld

Quite an impressive “company nameplate”.
2012-02-19__12-46-12.jpg

Fietsroutenetwerk

The cycling network with its nodes (here Zweefvliegveld, the glider airfield near Malden), which always offer such maps of the environment, are a tremendous help when going on a spontaneous ride!

Wild geese

Malden

In April 2012 I moved house again, after just one year. Malden with its train station Mook-Molenhoek is already two stops closer to Dortmund than Nijmegen.

Morning sun

This is the path behind the house in which I lived in 2012. The previous picture was also taken here. It was indeed idyllic in Malden.

Wanderers in this area should better not be afraid of big animals.

Autumn sun

A peaceful scene, while elsewhere the carnival started.
2012-11-11__11-46-11.jpg

Swaere Noodt

“Deep distress” would probably be an appropriate translation for this strange bus stop name.
2012-11-11__13-20-05.jpg

Philosophy

GEEN HAAST, GEEN SPIJT
leven is geen wedstrijd

(No haste, no regrets / live is no competition)
...too bad it too often feels exactly like this, especially in Germany.

2012-11-13__16-20-19.jpg

Rotterdam

While living in Nijmegen I explored several other places in the Netherlands.
2012-11-20__14-57-43.jpg

Hammock

A last picture from the Maas Waal Canal in Malden. In December my contract ended, and thus also my stay in the Netherlands.
